At the dawn of a new radio century

The 2007 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-07), (22 October to 16 November in Geneva), inaugurates a new century of activities in the ITU Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) relating to the process of updating the Radio Regulations. Its agenda contains about 30 items related to almost all terrestrial and space radio services and applications. It includes 3G and future generations, aeronautical telemetry and telecommand systems, satellite services including meteorological applications, maritime distress and safety signals, digital broadcasting, and the use of radio in the prediction and detection of natural disasters.

Bringing all radio services together

The World Radiocommunication Conference 2007 (WRC-07) will revise Radio Regulations, the international treaty governing the use of the radio-frequency spectrum and satellite orbits. Revisions will be made made on the basis of an agenda determined by the ITU Council, which takes into account decisions made by previous world radiocommunication conferences.
WRC-07 will consider the results of the studies on options to improve the international spectrum regulatory framework based on the effectiveness, appropriateness and impact of Radio Regulations with respect to the evolution of existing, emerging and future applications, systems and technologies. WRC-07 will make decisions on the most rational and efficient ways to exploit the limited resource of radio-frequency spectrum and manage satellite orbits, which will be critical and increasingly valuable for the achievement of the global connectivity goals in the 21st Century.
WRC-07 will also address any radiocommunication matter of worldwide character, instruct the Radio Regulations Board and the Radiocommunication Bureau, and review their activities, determine Questions for study by Radiocommunication Assemblies and Study Groups in preparation for future radiocommunication conferences.
In preparazione alla WRC07 la NASA ha indetto a Washington una teleconferenza per discutere i temi di interesse per le radiocomunicazioni nello spazio, lo studio dell'ambiente e la radioastronomia.

NASA HOLDS TELECONFERENCE ABOUT WORLD COMMUNICATIONS EVENT

WASHINGTON - NASA officials will hold a media teleconference Thursday, Oct. 18, at 4 p.m. EDT in advance of the World Radiocommunication Conference 2007 in Geneva, Switzerland. More than 2,000 people, representing almost 200 nations, will gather at the conference to negotiate radio frequency spectrum use. One of the key discussion topics at the conference of interest to NASA involves the protection of the radio spectrum, which is vital to studying Earth's environment, predicting weather and monitoring natural disasters.

The participants for Thursday's teleconference are:
- Scott Pace, associate administrator for Program Analysis and Evaluation, NASA Headquarters, Washington
- Badri Younes, deputy associate administrator for Space Communications and Navigation, NASA Headquarters

The conference is organized by the United Nations' International Telecommunication Union to review and make necessary revisions to the international treaty governing the use of the spectrum and satellite orbits. It is held every two to four years. The 2007 conference runs Oct. 22 through Nov. 16.

NASA will stream live audio of the teleconference at:
