French public radio included in plan to end advertising - minister

PARIS (Thomson Financial) - French Culture and Communication Minister Christine Albanel said that public radio broadcaster Radio France is included in a plan announced last week by president Nicolas Sarkozy to end advertising on state-owned television channels.
'Of course Radio France (...) has every reason to be covered by the ending of advertising' in public broadcasting, Albanel told radio station France Inter.
The minister added that advertising represented 'not much' of Radio France's budget. In a new year message to staff last week, Radio France chief executive Jean-Paul Cluzel noted that advertising accounted for about 8 pct of the group's budget, with a projection of 45 mln eur in ad revenue for 2008.
In contrast, advertising revenue brings in around 800 mln eur per year for France's public TV channels, or 40 pct of their total budget.
There has been speculation that the French government could sell one of the state-owned TV channels in order to make up for lost advertising income. But Prime Minister Francois Fillon told Agence France-Presse yesterday after a new year press conference that 'we need to maintain the firepower of public broadcasting and therefore maintain its scale.'
Fillon also said his government would present a bill to parliament during 2008, while Christine Albanel told France Inter that the government would try to get the law passed 'before the summer'.
